What The Oldwood Knows

Some forests can be mapped. The Oldwood is not one of them.

Sable Wren is a cartographer with excellent instruments, a proven methodology, and a commission from the Guild to survey the ancient forest at the edge of the small town of Ashwick. She has mapped fourteen commissions across the region. She knows how forests work.

The Oldwood disagrees.

Distances that held on the third day refuse to hold on the seventh. Paths shift between visits. Measurements taken with certified Guild instruments disagree with each other — and with an old secondhand compass she found in a bookshop's miscellaneous box, which inexplicably agrees with the forest. Sable has built her professional life on the reliability of measurement. The Oldwood is patient, unhurried, and entirely uninterested in cooperating.

What she doesn't expect is Ashwick itself. The bookshop owner who answers questions without asking why. The edge-keeper who has managed the forest's margins for thirty years and considers her methodology the problem. The miller's apprentice who knows the river better than anyone and carries her equipment without being asked. The old woman who has been watching the Oldwood's treeline from her chair for fifty years — and whose observations turn out to be the most precise survey data Sable has ever encountered.

The map she came to make turns out to require something her Guild training never covered: staying long enough to be known.
